Buying Points

Buying points is a type of wager that allows the player to literally buy points on his favor.  You can reduce the amount of points from the favorite team or add points to the underdog team. Or you can add points to the over or under bet.  You can only buy points when betting on  American Football and Basketball.

The cost to buy points can vary from one sportsbook to another.  One common formula is each half point is normally worth 10 cents going away from the starting line.  In the case of Football when you are buying in and out of a 3 point spread you will also be charged with an extra 10 cents.  When buying  in or out of a 7 point spread you are charged an extra 5 cents.  Here some examples:

Example 1: Giants are favored by 4 points over the Cowboys at -110 (You have to bet $110 to win $100)

A) You want to buy a half point so that the Giants are favored by only 3.5 points your bet will then be -120 (You have to bet $120 to win $100)

Example 2:  Giants are favored by 3 points over the Cowboys at -110 (You have to bet $110 to win $100)

A) You want to buy a half point so the Giants are favored by only 2.5 points your bet will then be -130 (You have to bet $130 to win $100)  an extra 10 cents because you moved out of 3 points.

Example 3:  Giants are favored by 7 points over the Cowboys at -110 You have to bet $110 to win $100)

A)  You want to buy a half point so the Giants are favored by only 6.5 point, you bet will be -125 (You have to bet $125 to win $100) an extra 5 cents because you moved out of 7 points.
